Kaitlin C. Miller, Ph.D.

Welcome to my website. My name is Kaitlin Miller and I am an Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama. As a former live TV reporter, my expertise sits as the intersection of practice and theory.
As a researcher, I study the harassment of journalists and other factors that affect their physical and emotional well-being. I also explore journalistic practices and how their experiences on social media--recently on TikTok--shape their views and daily lives. As a reporter, I experienced harassment from the very people I was working to inform. From verbal harassment to physical intimidation, my experience was not unique. Now as a scholar, I study how this abuse is affecting the fourth estate of our democratic society. My work has been published in journals such as Digital Journalism, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism Practice, and Journal of Broadcast and Electronic Media.

As an educator, I bring both my professional background and academic research to the classroom. As an undergraduate educator, I teach many hands-on skills-based courses the give students the chance to use cameras, microphones, and adobe editing software. At the graduate level, I lead doctoral seminars covering a breadth of mass media topics and foundational theories.
